On October 9th 2007, the New York Academy of Medicine and the Mount Sinai Global Health Center hosted a meeting of global health educators from academic institutions throughout New York.

The goal of the meeting was to facilitate collaboration between NYC-area global health programs for the purpose of:

Inspiring cooperation and support between programs
Exploring the potential for a model of â€œglobal health education without wallsâ€, involving sharing of teaching resources, curricula and field sites for the educational benefit of students and physicians from participating programs
Increasing the potential for funding from sources committed to collaborative Global Health educational initiatives

Each institution shared information about their global health educational offerings, including medical student, public health student, resident, fellow and faculty-level activities. A full list of participants and their powerpoint presentations are available below.

All participating programs were enthusiastic about future collaboration, and the following ideas were generated as potential next steps in this process:

1.Future "focus group" meetings where programs interested in particular topics can share ideas and resources. Suggested topics for focus groups include:

Public Health Education
Medical student education
Resident education
Use of technology and telemedicine in global health education
Development
Career counselling in GH
Service missions - ethical and practical considerations

2. Sharing teaching resources:

Building a database of global health teaching faculty that programs can draw from when developing curricula.

Inter-program communication and collaboration when bringing guest speakers into NY so that several programs may take advantage of an experts presence in the city.
